UMaine defenseman O’Neill headed to AHL after agreeing to contract with Winnipeg
University of Maine senior defenseman Will O’Neill posted on Twitter that he has signed with the Winnipeg Jets and will be assigned to the St. John’s IceCaps of the American Hockey League.
O’Neill, from Salem, Mass., was a key member of the Black Bears’ squad that advanced to the NCAA tournament. Maine lost 5-2 to Minnesota-Duluth in at Northeast Regional semifinal Saturday night.
O’Neill had two assists in that game and finished his career with 101 points, becoming the seventh Maine defenseman to reach 100 points.
He will join the IceCaps, who lead the Atlantic Division, for a Wednesday night game against the Norfolk Admirals.
