Scholarship program

The South Portland Housing Authority announced it has created and funded a scholarship program for residents pursuing higher education.

The total amount awarded this year will not exceed $2,000.

The scholarship program is open to any resident living in a property owned or managed by the South Public Housing Authority.

Applications are available at the SPHA’s office, 100 Waterman Drive.

BUXTON

Girl Scouts’ good deeds

Members of Girl Scouts of Maine Troop 1752 have exceeded their goal of doing 100 good deeds in celebration of Girl Scouts 100th anniversary. To date, the Buxton-based troop has completed 500 acts of community service. Now, they have set a new goal for 1,000 good deeds.

The troop’s acts of community service included recycling plastic bags, making holiday cards for military troops, donating toys to the Buxton Toy Box, delivering Valentine cards to nursing home residents, making dog biscuits and catnip toys for the Animal Refuge League pets, donating to the Ronald McDonald House and participating in a Birthday in a Bag project benefiting the York County Homeless Shelter.

Piday math event

Bonny Eagle Middle School announced the winners of its 17th annual Piday mathematics problem-solving event.

Prizes were awarded to the top three winners in five categories.

Mathematicians/Math Topic Poster winners were: Grade 6 – Whitney Regan, Journey Barnes and Lauryn Silva; Grade 7 – Bella Tardy, Tonya Chapman and Alizabeth Gaddy: and Grade 8 – Hayden Eilinger, Devin Borchard and Katherine Utz.

Sculptures/Models winners were: Grade 6 – Kaylee Collins, Kaley Rumery and Sadie Denico; Grade 7 – Bailey Sawyer, Ian Casciola and Mason Batchelder (tied for second place) and Blake Morin and Sammey Glantz (tied for third place); and Grade 8 -MacKenzie Gifford and Lily Lamkin (tied for first place), Dominick Johnson and Peter Tibbals, (tied for second place) and Tyler Collins.

Games/Puzzles: Grade 6 – Christopher Gifford, Connor Baldwin and Christian Napolitano (tied for second place) and Lea Pillsbury and Grade 7 – Caitlyn Sharples, Micaela Beaulieu and Kyra Light (tied for second place) and Hannah Fox.

Projects: Grade 6 – Max Harris and Walker Robichaud (tied for first place), Christopher Hascall and Katelin Kimball and Gia Libby (tied for third place); Grade 7 – Jennifer Turner, Elizabeth Croteau and Bethany Bartlett; Grade 8 – Cali Bureau, Maddie Freeman and Keegan Meyer (tied for second place) and Delanna Swett, Dayton Wintle, Samantha Avery and Deziree Larrivee (tied for third).

Honor flag raised

The Bonny Eagle High School honor flag was raised to acknowledge student athletes who were nominated by their coaches to attend the 15th Annual Southern Maine Athletic Association’s Student Athletic Summit at Scarborough High School.

Sweetheart Pageant

The 2012 Maine’s Sweetheart Pageant, recently held at Thornton Academy, has raised $1,500 benefiting the American Heart Association of Maine.

In all, 31 contestants competed in interviews, fitness wear and formal wear for six pageant titles.

Winners included Tiny Miss – Ella Radley of Scarborough; Little Miss – Kiera Knuckles of Saco; Preteen – Christen Morrissey of Scarborough; Teen – Drew Graves of Newport; Miss – Kaitlyn Hall of Saco; and Mrs. – Tara Bradstreet of Vasselboro.

Knuckles also won the show’s talent portion. Reighley Adams of Gorham was named most photogenic. Emily Baker of Topsham was the essay winner.

BRIDGTON

‘Moonlight’ fundraiser

The 17th annual Moonlight Charity Challenge on March 11 at Shawnee Peak raised more than $23,000 for Camp Sunshine in Casco.

The event has raised more than $250,000 for Camp Sunshine since 2002.

BIDDEFORD

UNE’s early college program

Applications are available for high school students seeking scholarship funding to attend the University of New England’s summer Early College Program to earn college credits for academic study.

A limited number of scholarships are available in the subjects of neuroscience, pre-law/trial advocacy, coastal marine ecology and creative writing.

All courses are taught by UNE faculty and award three transferable college credits.

Shaker Museum opening

The Alfred Shaker Museum celebrated the opening of its doors for the season. Volunteers recently installed a door from the old 1861 Shaker Schoolhouse, original to Alfred, between the two rooms of the museum.

Members of Alfred’s Brown Emmons Post of the American Legion donated the door.

BRUNSWICK

Teen center donation

A recent $500 donation from Martin’s Point to the Brunswick Teen Center included additional items that had been included on the center’s wish list. The center also received a file cabinet for its office, as well as juice, snacks and a box full of fun supplies such as colored duct tape, beads, new ping-pong paddles and balls.

Health career scholarships

The deadline for applying for the Mid Coast Hospital Auxiliary’s Herb Paris Health Career Scholarships is April 15.

Details are available online at www.midcoasthealth.com/volunteer. High school seniors and non-traditional students are eligible to apply. Scholarship winners will be announced in early June.

WELLS

Reading Day celebration

Thirty-three community members visited Wells Elementary School to read to students during the school’s 13th Annual Celebration of Reading Day. This year’s celebration also included guests readings for 5th and 6th graders at the Wells Junior High School.

The event yearly serves to honor the birthday of late children’s author Theodor Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss. Many of the guest readers included members of the Wells Rotary Club and its junior organization, the Interact Club from Wells High School.

The club donated $200 for the purchase of the books, which will now be added to various classroom book collections. Additionally, top readers from the 2011 Million Minute reading challenge received free movie tickets to the Wells 5-Star Cinema courtesy of the cinema and Dennis Lavasseur.
