WINDHAM — Fire destroyed a pickup truck and damaged a garage this morning at the Maine Correctional Center in Windham.

Judy Plummer, a spokeswoman for the Maine Department of Corrections, said a correctional trades center instructor and four inmates were working on a pickup truck inside a garage on the prison grounds when sparks from a metal cutting tool set the truck on fire.

Plummer said the crew was using an abrasion tool to cut a section of the floor out of the truck. The crew was on a break around 10 a.m. when sparks from the tool caused the truck to catch on fire.

The garage had to be evacuated, but did not affect the prison’s operations. No injuries were reported. Plummer said the state fire marshall’s office ruled the fire accidental.

The flames destroyed the truck but did little damage to the garage, Windham Fire Chief Charles Hammond said. Hammond said the fire was not close to the secure area where prisoners are housed.
