• Briana Eaton of York and Zachary Brown of Scarborough will attend the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

Eaton is a senior at York High School and is the daughter of Nancy and Randy Eaton.

Brown is a 2011 graduate of Scarborough High School and is currently a naval ROTC student at Norwich, Vt., University. He is the son of Greg and Tracey Brown.

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree nominated both students. The military academies make the final decision on which nominees they will accept.

Portland High School: Ellen Jewett, a senior, has been named a National Merit Scholarship Finalist and has been selected as a candidate for the Presidential Scholars Program. Jesse Dritz is a National Merit Commended Scholar.

Lucy Bauer, a junior and an Honors Latin Poetry student, has won first place in the state of Maine in the Classics Association of New England Writing Contest.

Deering High School: Julia Kang and Madeleine Ostwald, have been named candidates for the Presidential Scholars Program; Mateusz Tasarz is a National Merit Semi-finalist. Kathleen Donlan and Courtney McGorrill are National Merit Commended Scholars.

• Maine Scholastic Writing Awards: Eliza Lambert, a student at Casco Bay High School in Portland; Gaelyn Lindauer, a Bonny Eagle High School student and a member of the area writing class at York County Regional Fine Arts; Victoria Eon, Biddeford High School and Allison Pierpoint, Noble High School in Berwick have been selected as regional Gold Key Award winners. Their work will be forwarded to the national Scholastic Writing Awards.

At Lyman Moore Middle School in Portland, Thalia Muyderman was awarded one of 21 silver keys and honorable mention winners included Juliana Bart, Barbara Hersey-Powers, Kate Johnson,  and Taylor Sargent.

George Mason University’s Washington Youth Summit on the Environment. Several local students have been selected to participate in the summit: Shelby Sawyer, Freeport High School; Catherine Luedee, Lucy Rawson, Clare Tolan, Elizabeth Walfield and Alexander Paulus, all from Morse High School, Bath; and Victoria Knoepfel, York High School. National Youth Correspondents: Emma James, from Biddeford High School, and Paul Foster, from  Portland High School, have been nominated to represent Maine at the 2012 Washington Journalism and Media Conference at George Mason University. Freeport High School: senior Sarah Pier, has been named a  National Merit Scholarship Finalist.

• Thornton Academy, Saco: senior Tyler Cadorette has been selected as a finalist for a $5,000 scholarship offered by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution in the Good Citizens Program and Scholarship Contest. 

• Windham High School: Talia McKay, a senior, has been selected to receive the 2012 Principal’s Award in recognition of academic achievement and citizenship.

• The Woman’s Literary Union’s annual Creative Writing Contest awards were presented to: Elizabeth Yeaton, Deering High School, first place; Abby Onos, South Portland High School, second place; and Paige Richardson, Greely High School, third place. Honorable mention awards were given to: Valerie Carpentier and Alexis Stephenson, both from Deering High School; Mollie Braley and Hannah Somes, both from Greely High School; and Alison Pelczar, Scarborough High School.
