Whole Foods family food drive begins Thursday

Whole Foods Market, 2 Somerset St., will hold its Spring Food Drive for Families from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.

All non-perishable foods collected will be donated to the Wayside Food Programs and distributed to 42 food pantries, soup kitchens and social service agencies throughout Cumberland County.

Volunteers from the program will be at the food drive to hand out their wish lists.

Winery collects silver medal in international competition

Milestone 2010, the signature blend of Salmon Falls Winery, won a silver medal last month at the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition in Rochester, N.Y.

It was the first competition for winery owner Andrew Bevan, who started the venture in 2008 and now produces about 200 cases per year.

Milestone is a Rhone-style blend that has been Bevan’s signature wine since its inaugural release in 2009.

Salmon Falls wine is served at Maine restaurants such as Arrows and MC Perkins Cove in Ogunquit, Hugo’s and Five Fifty-Five in Portland, and the Black Trumpet in Portsmouth, N.H.

St. Joseph’s College to host planet-friendly meal

Saint Joseph’s College is hosting its annual “planet-friendly” lunch 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 19 in the school’s dining hall.

The lunch will feature low-carbon dishes made with local foods that don’t contribute to climate change. On the menu will be applewood-smoked roasted Maine-ly Poultry chicken fricasse with Swan’s wildflower honey; Pearson Town Farms sweet-pea gazpacho with Smiling Hill Farms creme fraiche; spring Mainely Hydroponics pea-shoot salad with Pearson Town Farm radishes, garden greens and garnish peas; Backyard Farms tomatoes and Wyman’s Farm Blueberry Vinaigrette; and lots more.
