BRUNSWICK — Melissa DellaTorre fired a three-hit shutout in the second game to help lead Bowdoin College to a sweep of the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Pickard Field, 16-4 and 4-0.
Winners of four consecutive games and five of its last six, Bowdoin improved to 17-8 overall. Southern Maine dropped to 1-21.
DellaTorre allowed just three singles and fanned nine Huskies. She walked four hitters and allowed just three baserunners to advance to third base.
Bowdoin took control of the game with three runs in the third. Hillary Smyth and Gen Barlow each drove in a run with a single.
Stefanie Stockwell was saddled with the loss for USM. She allowed four earned runs on nine hits and four walks.
In the opener, the Huskies jumped on top 4-0 in the first on starter Tricia Thibodeau. But, the Polar Bears answered with 12 runs in the home half of the opening frame. Amy Hackett’s grandslam home run highlighted the big first inning for Bowdoin.
Thibodeau earned the win for Bowdoin, allowing five earned runs on six hits over five innings. She yielded three walks and had three strikeouts. Caitlin LeBorgne took the loss, allowing 14 earned runs on eight hits and eight walks.
Bowdoin is slated to host Trinity on Friday at 4 p.m. in a key East Division New England Small College Athletic Conference contest. The Polar Bears and Bantams meet on Saturday in a noon doubleheader.
Men’s lacrosse
Bowdoin snapped a two-game losing streak with a convincing 16- 3 win over Clark University under the lights at Ryan Field on Wednesday.
The 18th- ranked Polar Bears improved to 8-3, while the Cougars fell to 5-5.
Bowdoin will travel to play at Wesleyan on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Ten different Bowdoin players scored against Clark, led by three goals and two assists from Billy Bergner. Lawton Salley added three goals, with Conor O’Toole and Brendan Hughes picking up two tallies apiece.
Jeffrey Wasson, Chris Johnson and Graham Werner accounted for the Clark scoring.
The Polar Bears sprinted to a 4-1 lead after one period and pushed their advantage to 7-1 before Wasson netted Clark’s second goal with 4:30 left in the second quarter. O’Toole, Salley and Brian Durkin all scored in the final three minutes before halftime to give the hosts a 10-2 edge at intermission.
Chris Williamson allowed three goals and made two saves in 45 minutes for the Polar Bears before giving way to Michael Bottinelli, who made two saves and allowed no goals over the final 15 minutes. Andrew DeVito made eight saves in net for the Cougars.
Bowdoin held a 40-12 edge in shots and forced 27 Clark turnovers. The Polar Bears won 12 of 22 faceoffs thanks to a seven-of-11 performance by Hughes.
