To the editor:
The present polarization along party lines of our U.S. senators and representatives has pretty much blocked the Congress from attending to the very serious problems that face the country.
Now we have the opportunity to place in the Senate a man who will not be told how to vote by any political leader. Angus King will support positions that benefit the people of the state of Maine.
Angus King is a man of high integrity, intellect and character, with an understanding of the problems facing our citizens, and with the ability to find reasonable solutions to those problems.
During his terms as our governor, he demonstrated the ability to work effectively with people regardless of political affiliation. In the Senate, Angus will enjoy the respect of his colleagues, and will be an effective advocate for our best interests.
I do not intend to speak ill of the Democratic and Republican candidates who will be competing against Angus King in the upcoming election. But until we can return to the time when public interest outweighs party loyalty, we need the independent voice of Angus.
Daniel E. Harris selectman,
Boothbay

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
