NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — The Portland Sea Dogs (6-15) trailed in the ninth, but notched five runs in the final frame and closed out a 7-3 Eastern League win over the New Britain Rock Cats (13-7) Wednesday afternoon at New Britain Stadium.

With one down in the ninth, Bryce Brentz doubled off New Britain reliever Danny Turpen. Jeremy Hazelbaker pinch ran and scored the tying run on a Dan Butler RBI single. Heiker Meneses followed with a sinking liner that hit the second base bag and bounded into the outfield, allowing Ronald Bermudez to score to go-ahead run.

The ’Dogs scored two more runs on a Juan Carlos Linares’ single and an error.

Reynoldo Rodriguez doubled for Portland and scored on a wild pitch. Butler also doubled and scored on a Derrik Gibson single.

Portland starter Chris Balcom-Miller struggled out of the gate, allowing two runs in the first inning on three hits.

Eammon Portice backed up the starter with two innings of scoreless relief and Charlie Rosario (2-0) earned his second win with two scoreless innings.

The Sea Dogs return home to host the Reading Phillies on Friday night. The Phillies are in town for three games before the Trenton Thunder come to Hadlock Field for a four-game set next week. Portland will send right-handed pitcher Chris Martin (0-2, 5.03) to the mound. Reading will counter with righty Julio Rodriguez (1-0, 3.21).
