CONGRATULATIONS ARE IN ORDER for two local karate students for earning five medals at the April 2012 Ozawa Cup. The Ozawa Cup is one of the most prestigious traditional karate tournaments in the country. It is held each year in Las Vegas and attracts 1,400 competitors from 12 countries. Topsham’s Maximo Varela, 11, and his brother Sebastian Varela, 8, represented themselves and Shotokan Karate Academy of Topsham, and earned medals in forms, weapons and sparring competition. Max (top photo) won first place in forms, with an excellent performance of a difficult black belt kata. Sebastian’s solid brown belt forms routine (kata) won second place and he earned medals in all three events. “Earning five medals in international level competition is a testament to Max’s and Sebastian’s dedication and work ethic,” said Sensie Nelson Vaughn.
