WESTBROOK — Coinciding with the conclusion of National Volunteer Week, Maine’s credit unions have released the final results of volunteer efforts by Maine’s credit unions in 2011.

The Maine Credit Union League coordinates a statewide tracking of volunteer time contributed by Maine credit unions through its Credit Unions Share for ME program. The results reveal that Maine’s credit unions volunteered a recordsetting 35,008.50 hours in 2011, a 13 percent increase over 2010 totals.

In 2011, four credit unions with locations in the Midcoast region participated, including Five County CU, which was in the top five in total hours contributed and staff volunteering each month; Midcoast FCU; Atlantic Regional FCU; and Down East CU.

The top five credit unions contributing the most volun- teer hours were (location of main office and total hours): University CU in Orono (4,256); Saco Valley CU in Saco (3,485.50); Five County CU in Bath (3,169.50); Rainbow FCU in Lewiston (2,021); and Community CU in Lewiston (1,492.50).

The top five credit unions with the highest average number of individuals volunteering each month were: University CU in Orono (53); Five County CU in Bath (24); Saco Valley CU in Saco (17); (tie) Rainbow FCU in Lewiston, Atlantic Regional FCU in Brunswick and Monmouth FCU in Monmouth for fourth with an average of 15 staff members volunteering each month; and Midcoast FCU in Bath (14).

Created in 2002 by the Maine Credit Union League, the 10-year-old program has received numerous awards and recognition for quantifying the efforts of Maine’s credit unions when it comes to community service by documenting those efforts.

“Credit unions embody the spirit of what it means to be a part of the community. From local staff to a volunteer, unpaid board of directors, Maine credit unions give back to their communities every day in the form of volunteer activities,” said John Murphy, Maine Credit Union League president.
