BRUNSWICK — Calypso, a 2.5-year-old female pit mix, is back at the Coastal Humane Society (CHS) after an exhaustive two-week search.

While in foster care receiving treatment for heartworm, Calypso managed to chew through her leash and skedaddled on April 17.

Using Facebook and local newspapers, the Coastal Humane Society enlisted volunteers to help search for Calypso.

“Staff and volunteers spent up to six hours at a time looking for her,” a CHS release states. “Search party leaders Steph Gondek, Allie Athearn, Amanda Sundeen (staff), and Cathy Paquette (volunteer) estimate over 100 hours of time was donated in the quest to retrieve Calypso.”

West Bath resident Kathy Perry and her husband, Keith, became involved in the search after they saw a photo of Calypso in the newspaper and spotted her on their property.

“After unsuccessful attempts and many hours of calling for her, a trap lent to CHS from Almost Home Rescue of South Portland was set in their yard,” the release states.

On Wednesday morning, the Perrys found Calypso in the trap.

“They were overjoyed to be of service to this very special dog,” the release states.

“Sometimes you’re put in a position to help,” Kathy Perry said in the release. “Some things just happen for a reason. I was just so happy to help out.”

Calypso arrived back at CHS a little after noon on Wednesday.

“She’s 12 pounds lighter than the last time we saw her, but shelter veterinarian Dr. Mandie Wehr says she looks good,” the release states. “What’s more, we may have identified her original owner, a Sanford resident who recognized her on Facebook.

Kathy Perry plans to become a regular volunteer for the shelter.
