To the editor:

I am writing on behalf of my parents.

My father has terminal lung cancer and recently moved from Orr’s Island to a one-story house on Bailey Island. Though he was otherwise enjoying the new house, he was having a hard time going outside because the front steps were just too much for him.

On Saturday, April 14, a whole team of angels showed up to make him a handicap ramp so he can more easily access the outdoors either with his walker, or if he needs a wheelchair in the future. This is another shining example of why we love this community so much.

We would like to personally thank Hammond Lumber for donating the materials at cost to save some money. A huge thank you also goes to Paul Smith and Charlie Libby for gathering volunteers.

To our angels who volunteered their time and showed up early to get the job done: Thank you, Steve Potvin, Greg Webber, Malcom McFarland, Mike Harvey, Guy Baker, Herman Coombs Jr., Alan Leeman, Bill Coombs and Hugh Hardcastle.

We would like to thank the following people for donating food for all the hard workers: Wendy LeFavor and the Bailey Island General Store, The Store on Orr’s, Wanda Johnson, and Jason and Nicole Smith.

Please make sure that if you run into any of these people, give them a big thank you for making such a difference in someone’s life.

Many, many thanks,

Mary Coombs,
Harpswell
