PORTLAND (AP) — Maine police say a standoff with a man suspected of shooting a woman in the chest from his Portland apartment has ended peacefully.
Lt. Gary Rogers says the suspect surrendered Saturday night after police fired tear gas through his apartment windows. Brian Kelley was arrested and charged with elevated aggravated assault, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and a civil violation of creating a police standoff.
The 48-year-old Kelley was in custody and wasn’t immediately available for comment.
Police Chief Michael Sauschuck tells The Portland Press Herald that the woman was walking down a street Saturday morning when the suspect shot her from his apartment. She suffered nonlife threatening injuries.
The shooting took place while 200 students took their SATs at nearby Portland High School, which was briefly put on lockdown.
