AUGUSTA — The Maine veterans’ hospital in Augusta has launched an investigation after patient records were dumped unshredded into the trash.

A spokesman for the Maine VA Medical Center says the documents never left the grounds and no personal information was disclosed.

A bag containing the documents was discovered in a trash bin on April 11.

An employee told the privacy officer at the medical center and the documents were collected.

To ensure that no other sensitive material was trashed, the trash bin and garbage truck were thoroughly searched.

The spokesman tells the Bangor Daily News the garbage truck was locked and secured in a building overnight.

The privacy officer said the staff members involved were counseled, additional training was provided and follow-up monitoring was done.
