PORTLAND (AP) — A civil rights group has filed a lawsuit against two jail guards in Maine for allegedly beating a prisoner for no apparent reason.
The ACLU of Maine Foundation filed the complaint Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Portland.
The suit claims that two Cumberland County Jail guards repeatedly punched Wilmer Moreno Recinos in the chest and pepper-sprayed him in the face while escorting him to his cell on Nov. 10, 2010. The suit seeks unspecified damages.
ACLU Legal Director Zachary Heiden said there needs to be accountability when a jail assault takes place.
Recinos has since been deported to El Salvador for being in the U.S. illegally.
