BOWDOINHAM — Richmond and Bowdoinham firefighters rushed to deal with a burning vehicle Tuesday morning on Interstate 295 southbound near mile marker 37 in Bowdoinham.
Richmond Fire Chief Andrew Pierce said the rear end of a Chevrolet pickup truck caught fire, reportedly around 9:40 a.m. The vehicle’s rear axle had bound up and overheated, according to Pierce.
The fire was out by the time fire crews arrived, Pierce said, having burned most of the grease, but it was still hot. Crews sprayed water to cool down the area that had burned. Damage was contained to the rear end axle, Pierce said.
No one was injured and there were no passengers. The driver had maneuvered the truck onto the grass in the median, so firefighters closed a nearby section of the passing lane. Pierce estimated firefighters were on scene for at least 20 minutes ensuring the fire was out and awaiting arrival of a wrecker.
