To the editor:

Thank you very much for publishing my letter, (“Be my friend,” March 9). It meant a lot to me.

My teacher was so surprised because, for about two weeks, all the mail in her box was mine. (In my letter, I had asked Maine residents to send me items that represent their state). People sent me everything from hats and shirts to vintage post cards and friendly letters. Someone even sent a license plate.

Whenever the mail was delivered to our classroom, my teacher would put it on my desk. Kids swarmed around me, begging me to open all the packages.

The really neat thing was the feedback. Because of the amount and how nice it was, the fifth grade teachers might require it in the state reports.

Look at me, I’m changing policy.

In my letter, I wrote something about how your response would be a test of exactly how friendly people in Maine are. Well, you Maine-iacs passed it!

Thank you again! Because of how nice you all were, I’m hoping to someday make it to Maine and eat some real Maine lob-stah.
