Spring Harbor nurses celebrate
Nurses from Spring Harbor Hospital in Westbrook recently presented a check for $1,000 to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association in Portland.
The gift is part of an annual tradition by the hospital’s nursing staff to show support for the community in honor of National Nurses Week, which this year runs May 6 through 12. Each year, nurses from Spring Harbor Hospital’s Patient Care Committee select a local nonprofit agency as a beneficiary of their gift. The money for the donation comes from the nursing staff’s appreciation fund at the hospital. The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association was chosen as this year’s beneficiary because of its research on stroke prevention. Stroke has touched the lives of many at Spring Harbor Hospital.
“Our nurses are not only an integral part of Spring Harbor’s treatment team, they also help make a tremendous difference to both those in our care and those in our community,” Joyce Cotton, chief clinical and nursing officer, said in a statement. “The theme for this year’s National Nurses Week is ‘Nurses: Advocating, Leading, Caring.’ We are proud of our nurses for actively demonstrating all of these qualities.”
Spring Harbor employs 101 nurses and is southern Maine’s only nonprofit hospital devoted to serving individuals who experience serious mental illness or co-occurring substance-use disorders. The hospital is a member of Maine Mental Health Partners, an integrated network of high-quality mental health treatment providers and services in the state’s southernmost 11 counties. Traditionally, National Nurses Week is devoted to highlighting the diverse ways in which registered nurses, who comprise the largest health care profession, are working to improve health care.
