Mud boots glam fest benefits Chocolate Church

BATH — The Chocolate Church Arts Center’s Mud Boots & Black Tie Fundraiser kicks off at 6 p.m. Saturday at 804 Washington St.

“This year’s theme is ‘Hollywood Style,’ and will feature not only a real red carpet, but dazzling hors d’oeuvres, decadent desserts, a cash bar and a spectacular silent auction,” a Chocolate Church release states. “Later in the evening, guests will move from the Curtis Room over to the Chocolate Church Arts Center main stage for the incredible vocal styling of Leila Percy, backed by the Scott Davis Jazz Quintet.”

“Gentlemen are encouraged to wear ‘creative’ black tie, and ladies a bit of Hollywood glam, along with mud boots for all,” the release states.

Bid items for the silent auction include a sunset wine cruise on the Damariscotta River, five days at Sugarloaf in a two-bedroom condo, jewelry and a ride to the polls with a former state representative on Election Day.

Antiques market hosts Mother’s Day Tea

BRUNSWICK — Cabot Mill Antiques will host a Victorian Mother’s Day Tea from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

The day’s festivities will include a seated afternoon tea with all the trimmings. Guests can enjoy a variety of decadent teas, coffee, tea cakes and pastries. Prize drawings include tea gift baskets and a spa gift basket.

Victorian dress is optional but highly encouraged.

Chamber musicians perform tonight

FREEPORT — Five musicians from the Portland Chamber Music Festival will perform works by Mozart, Dvorak, Wuorninen and Rebecca Clarke at 8 p.m. today at the Freeport Performing Arts Center, 30 Holbrook St.

Scheduled performers include clarinetist Jo-Ann Sternberg of New York; co-founder and artistic director of the PCMF, Jennifer Elowitch, and Georgia native Gabriela Diaz, on violins; Stefanie Taylor, a world-class performing violist; and Boston University faculty member Marc Johnson on his fine, old Italian cello made in 1730 by Francesco Stradivarius.

Photo prize winners to discuss their works

TOPSHAM — Topsham Public Library on Foreside Road will host a free artists talk featuring the winners of the 2012 “Joy of the Lens” juried photography exhibit at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Crooker Gallery.

Prizes have been awarded in categories including Nature and Landscapes/ Seascapes, People, Animals, Digital Darkroom and Details & Macro.

Art show, bake sale on tap at Union Church

DURHAM — The Durham Historical Society will hold a spring art show, featuring local artists, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 19 at the Union Church (Old Durham Town Hall) on Route 136.

Admission is free. A bake sale to benefit the society’s Restoration Fund will complement the art show.

A handcrafted quilt has been donated for a raffle to raise funds for the Durham Historical Society Restoration Fund. The quilt will be on display at the art show and other summer and fall events. The winner will be drawn after the society’s last fall event.

Contest aspires to reward elder poets

MONTEREY, Calif. — Entries are now being accepted in the 20th annual National Senior Poets Laureate Poetry Competition for American poets age 50 and older.

A laureate poet will be named for each state and territory represented, and the writers of the two best laureate poems will receive the National Senior Poet Laureate Award ($500) and National Senior Poet Laureate Runner-up Award ($100).

‘Circle Mirror’ rides on at Mad Horse

PORTLAND — Mad Horse Theatre Company closes its 26th season with Annie Baker’s comedy “Circle Mirror Transformation.”

“The play traces the lives of a handful of small-town Vermont residents who gather each week for an acting class taught at the local community center,” a Mad Horse release states. “By the play’s end, we seem to see to the very bottom of these souls, and feel how the artificial intimacy of the acting class has shaped their lives in substantial ways.”

Mad Horse Theatre Company member David Currier directs an ensemble cast of two men and three women consisting of Mad Horse Company members Brent Askari, Maureen Butler and Janice Gardner, and guest artists Olwyn Moxhay and Payne Ratner.

The production runs through May 20 at Lucid Stage, 29 Baxter Blvd. Show times are Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m.; and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Pemaquid Point Lighthouse to open

PEMAQUID — Pemaquid Point Lighthouse will open for the season on Sunday.

Visitors are welcome to tour the lighthouse between 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. this Sunday.

Beginning May 19 and continuing through mid-October, the lighthouse will be open to visitors from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week.

The Friends of Pemaquid Point Lighthouse (FPPL) seeks volunteers to help maintain the site and deal with visitors. Those who can spare three hours a week, or every other week, are assigned a regular time slot. Others who can’t commit to a regular weekly schedule may prefer to be an alternate or help with maintenance projects.
