While the tennis team tournament won’t begin for a couple weeks, local singles standouts began competing for top honors Saturday.
Falmouth’s three dynamic girls’ singles players all moved on. No. 1 Annie Criscione blanked Madeline Ciraldo of Cape Elizabeth, 6-0, 6-0, second-ranked Analise Kump ousted South Portland’s Kera Snyder, 6-1, 6-0 and No. 3 Olivia Leavitt was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Deering’s Jasmine Abasta.
Also advancing were North Yarmouth Academy’s Sarah Jordan, the No. 8 seed (6-2, 6-2 over Cape Elizabeth’s Catherine Macdonald), 10th-ranked Hannah Potter of Yarmouth (who eliminated Scarborough’s Mikaela Gove, 8-1, and Thornton Academy’s Lyndsey Reese, 6-1, 6-0) and No. 16 Lindsey Robinson of Yarmouth (an 8-1 winner over Deering’s Courtney McGorrill and a 6-3, 6-3 victor over South Portland’s Brianna Woodward).
NYA’s Alexandra Morrison won her first round match, 8-5, over Massabesic’s Brianna Missick, then was ousted, 0-6, 4-6 by Cheverus’ Maria Cianchette. Greely’s Anna Collins beat Thornton Academy’s Audrey Zafirson, 8-3, in the first round, then lost, 4-6, 1-6 to Portland’s Sophie Hulbert. Greely’s Alison Eaton was an 8-2 winner over Kennebunk’s Anne Read in the first round, then was eliminated, 4-6, 6-7 (3) by Portland’s Margot Andreasen.
Yarmouth’s Chas McCain fell, 7-9, to Gorham’s Emily Estes in the first round. NYA’s Jessica Powers also dropped her first match, 6-8, to Ally Strewn of McAuley.
On the boys’ side, Falmouth’s Justin Brogan, the No. 3 seed, advanced with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over South Portland’s Eric Berry-Sandilen. Teammate Brendan McCarthy (seeded fifth) also advanced, 8-3, over Ryan Gilbert of Gorham and Fryeburg’s Barrett Wilson, 6-0, 6-0. NYA’s Burke Paxton, ranked 13th, moved on by defeating Windham’s Tyler Nadeau, 8-1, and Scarborough’s Jeffrey Sirocki, 6-4, 6-1.
Falmouth’s Aiden McGrory was an 8-1 winner over Scarborough’s Joseph Corbeau in the first round, but was eliminated, 1-6, 0-6, by No. 2 Matt Gilman of Cape Elizabeth. Yarmouth’s Alex Coroi beat Windham’s Devin Pelletier, 8-3, in the first round, but was ousted, 0-6, 0-6, by No. 4 Tyler Adams of Bonny Eagle. NYA’s Bruce Tetreault downed Fryeburg’s Jiaming Zheng by default, then lost to York’s Andrew Lamonica, 2-6, 0-6. Teammate Dean Walters downed Freeport’s Abrim Berkemeyer, 8-4, in the first round, then lost, 1-6, 1-6 to No. 14 Joshua Behrens of Kennebunk in the qualifying round.
Freeport’s Chris West (0-8 to McCarthy) and Landon Easler (6-8 to Jackson Towle of Marshwood), Greely’s Liam Dougherty (1-8 to No. 8 Noah Finberg of Deering), Alex Dorr (1-8 to No. 17 David Woodbury of Cheverus) and Philip Hodgkins (5-8 to South Portland’s Joey Hendricks) and Yarmouth’s Sam Beaulieu (3-8 to Tyler Vigue of Biddeford) and Braden Becker (0-8 to Waynflete’s Isaac Salas) all lost in the first round.
Teams hit stretch run
Falmouth’s defending Class B state champion boys’ squad was in first place in the Western B Heals at the start of the week with a 7-0 record. Freeport (4-4) was in sixth place, Yarmouth (1-6) sat in seventh, while Greely (1-8) was 10th. The Rangers got in the win column Friday, 3-2, at Fryeburg. In Western C, NYA is enjoying its best season since 2007 and began the week 6-2 and seventh in the Heals. The Panthers were at Cape Elizabeth and close the regular season at Falmouth Wednesday of next week.
On the girls’ side, Falmouth, the four-time state champion, improved to 8-0 and extended its win streak to 69 matches with a 5-0 victory over Yarmouth Monday. The Yachtsmen are first in Western B and close the regular season at home versus defending Class C champion Waynflete Monday. The Clippers (6-2) are fifth in Western B. Greely is 4-3 and third. Freeport (2-6) sat 14th. In Western C, NYA began the week 1-6 and 10th in the Heals (the top nine teams in the region make the playoffs).
