PORTLAND (AP) — A Portland man and woman have been sentenced to 10 years each in prison for what a prosecutor called an “animalistic” sexual assault of another woman with dowels and a golf club.

The Portland Press Herald reports that Karla Wilson and Shawn Batchelder were each sentenced Thursday to 25 years in prison with all but 10 suspended, after pleading guilty to gross sexual assault.

Prosecutors say the victim was the mother of Batchelder’s son, who was in the neonatal unit of a nearby hospital at the time of the August attack. The assault occurred just three weeks after the victim had undergone a Caesarean section.

Prosecutors say the assault began when Wilson got angry because she believed Batchelder and the victim had stolen drugs.

Both defendants apologized in court.
