LEWISTON (AP) — A freshman at Bates College in Maine has died after collapsing on a beach in Scotland, where he and nine other fellow students were participating in a study-abroad program.

The college said today it was informed by Scottish police that 19-year-old Evan Dube of Plaistow, N.H., had gone into the water while the students were on the beach for a cookout near Lerwick in the Shetland Islands. Companions performed CPR. Dube was airlifted to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

At Bates, more than 200 students, faculty and staff gathered at Perry Atrium on the Lewiston campus for comfort and support Sunday night.

Evan’s fellow students in Scotland are receiving grief counseling and will return to the U.S. as scheduled on Tuesday.

Evan was a classical studies major.
