MANSFIELD, Conn. — The Bowdoin College baseball team saw its season come to an end Friday, falling to Western New England University, 7-1, in the NCAA Regionals.

The Polar Bears (26-20) ended their season with the second-most wins in school history, a runner-up finish in the New England Small College Athletic Conference Tournament, the team’s second ever NCAA Division III Tournament berth and the program’s first NCAA Tournament victory all-time.

After being held to seven hits in a setback against Wheaton on Thursday, nearly every member of the Western New England lineup had at least one base knock, led by Matt Anthonis, who was 4-for-5 with two runs scored.

The Golden Bears struck first in the top of the second, with an RBI each going to Stephen Buckley and with the early 2-0 advantage.

Bowdoin cut into the lead in the bottom of the third. Tim McGarry drove in a run, but WNE pitcher Mark DiTommasso retired 12 of the next 16 hitters he faced.
