PHIPPSBURG — During a ceremony at Hatch Point near Center Pond on Monday, the town will erect a flagpole and dedicate it to the memory of Richard L. Hatch, who donated several large tracts of land to The Nature Conservancy.

Between 2005 and 2009, Hatch donated nearly 2,000 acres in Phippsburg to The Nature Conservancy to establish the Basin Preserve, land to the state of Maine to enlarge Phippsburg’s Winnegance and Cutting Creek preserves, and donated land to the town to ensure access to Center Pond, according to a release from the town.

The memorial features a raised perennial garden surrounded by a stone wall, a 35-foot lighted flagpole and an engraved stone tablet honoring Hatch’s gift of the land on Center Pond “For the Enjoyment of All.”

The project was led by Kevin McAloney Jr., to fulfill part of the requirements for an Eagle Scout badge, according to a release. McAloney planned the project, sought support for it from area veterans, organizations and businesses, and coordinated construction.

The project was supported by Bath VFW Post 7738, Phippsburg American Legion Memorial Post 216, the Phippsburg Sportsmen’s Association, Phippsburg Land Trust, the town of Phippsburg, Unity Circle, Bisson’s Center Store, Doughty and Son Contractors, Curtis Doughty, Page Monuments, Lawrence R. Pye, Tax Bracket II, Scott and Ashley Thayer, Linda and Jim Totman, Anna Varian and Mike Young.
