With one event remaining in the State Class C Track Championships, the Lisbon High School boys held the slimmest of leads in a three-team race for the title.

The Greyhounds sported 59 points, Sacopee Valley 58.5 and North Yarmouth Academy stood at 54. With the Hawks of Sacopee seeded No. 1 in the 4 x 400 relay and the Panthers second, Lisbon, the No. 5 seed, needed an upset, a pair of drop batons from its rivals or possibly a gust of wind as Mother Nature’s wrath of rain approached.

Lisbon received none of the above, as NYA finished second, Sacopee Valley third and the Greyhounds eighth in the boys’ final event, giving the Hawks the Class C title with 64.50 points, followed by NYA (62 points) and Lisbon (59).

“We did everything that we wanted to do, figuring we would have around 60 points at the end,” said Lisbon coach Dean Hall.

Orono finished fourth with 55 points, followed by Maranacook (37), Madison (34.50), Hall- Dale (34), Foxcroft Academy (28), Freeport (24) and George Stevens Academy (28). Wiscasset picked up six points to finish 25th.

In the girls competition, favored Orono steadily pulled away, racking up 126.75 points to capture the Class C title.

John Bapst and defending champion Traip Academy finish tied for second place with 72 points, with the Greyhounds fourth (59).

“The girls did as well as they could, and in most cases many of them even moved up ahead of their seeds,” said Hall.

Maine Central Institute ended up in fifth place with 39.75 points. Rounding out the top 10 were Maranacook (34.25), Hall-Dale (28) Foxcroft Academy (22), Seacoast Christian School (22) and St. Dom’s (22).

Boys

Things started off well for the Freeport boys, as the team of Ian McGhie, Zach Merrill, Taylor Saucier and Harrison Stiverscapturedthe4x800- meter relay state title in 8:27.91.

“This is the first boys team from Freeport to make it to New Englands (scheduled for this upcoming Saturday at Thornton Academy in Saco),” said Stivers, who ran the final leg. Taylor came out fast, and we had the kicks at the end. This is awesome!”

Stivers finished second in the 400 in 51.85, while Saucier took third in the 800 (2:02.43).

Wiscasset’s Joe Chapman accounted for his team’s points, picking up third in the long jump with a leap of 20-03, while NYA had Bath’s Rudy Guliani (fourth, 1600, 4:38.62), Alex Coffin of Freeport (sixth, 800, 2:03.30;helpedthe4x400team to second) and Ryan Salerno of Brunswick (sixth, javelin, 139- 06).

The big scorer for Lisbon was Morgan Reeves. The senior picked up 36 points on the day, scoring victories in the pole vault (12-06) and long jump (21- 05.75), events he was seeded second. His leap of 41-02.25 in the triple jump was second to Sacopee Valley’s Ryan Moulton (41-06),whilethe4x100teamof Reeves, Quincy Thompson, Zach Splude and Aaron Halls were edged by NYA at the finish line, crossing in 46.58.

“I just wanted to try my hardest,” said Reeves. “In the pole vault, the Orono kid (Nick Frederick, seeded first at 13-0, but finished second with a vault of 11- 06) had a bad day, and I was able to take advantage.”

Lisbon scored 20 points in the 1600 race/walk, as favored Tyler Bard held his seed to pick up the win in 7:07. Teammate Ben Kates finished second in 7:33.62, while Alexander Hall crossed the line in sixth at 8:23.21.

“We picked up a lot of points in this event, with Tyler and I able to get out early and pull away,” said Kates.

Other scorers for the ’Hounds were Kyle Sheehan in the 300 hurdles (sixth, 42.76) and Halls in the long jump (seventh, 19-0).

Girls

Lisbon’s day began well, with the4x800teamof VirginiaTolbert, Olivia Bulgin, Angelica Bulgin and Kayla Angelico finishing second to John Bapst in 10:16.22.

“We knew how important it was going to be to come out quickly, and we were able to move up a spot from our third seed,” said Angelica Bulgin, who also scored in the javelin (third, 99-11).

Lindsey Whitney defended her 1600 race/walk crown, cruising past the field in 8:20.80, leaping for joy at the finish line.

“I worked so hard for this, and got my best time here today,” said Whitney, who along with teammates Olivia Bulgin (fifth, 8:50.55) and Ashley Field (seventh, 9:24.45) combined for 14 points in the event.

Other Lisbon scorers were Gabby Ouellette (third, high jump, 4-08; sixth, long jump, 14- 10), Angelico (fifth, javelin, 99- 02), Allie Bubar (seventh, discus, 88-07), Briana Moore (second, shot put, 34-02), Justice Fraser-Gagnon (fifth, shot put, 30-04.25), Kaitlyn Doustou (seventh, high jump, 4-06), and Mia Durgin (fourth, pole vault, 7- 06).Also,the4x400teamof Durgin, Olivia Bulgin, Angelica Bulgin and Angelico finished fourth in 4:31.52.

Freeport’s top finish in the girlsmeetwasthe4x100squad of Abby Roney, Kelsey Grant, Katie O’Neil and Hayley Steckler, which finished fifth in 55.36.

Grant scored in the 100 (seventh, 14.03) and the 200 (sixth, 28.92), while Steckler was seventh in the 400 (1:05.53), Ciera Wentworth seventh in the 800 (2:33.36) andthe4x400teamofEmily Martin, Margo Ruby, Elly Bengtsson and Steckler seventh in 4:35.49.
