Spain, Italy settle for draw at European Championships

Italy and title holder Spain played to a 1-1 draw Sunday at the European Championships, and Croatia beat Ireland 3-1 in their tournament debuts.

Italy took the lead on substitute Antonio Di Natale’s goal in the 61st minute at Gdansk, Poland. Cesc Fabregas equalized in the 64th.

Croatia jumped in front early against Ireland, as Mario Mandzukic scored on a header in the third minute at Poznan, Poland. Defender Sean St. Ledger tied it on a header in the 19th minute, but Nikica Jelavic made it 2-1 just before halftime, and Mandzukic added another in the 48th minute.

FCBL: Lincoln Sanborn allowed just two hits in five innings, and Tucker White hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to help the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide (2-2) take a 4-0 win over the visiting Brockton Rox (1-2) in a Futures Collegiate Baseball League game.

NECBL: Jordan Betts, Matt Weckerle and Cam Young each went 3 for 5 with an RBI for the Sanford Mainers (1-3) in a 10-4 victory over the New Bedford Bay Sox (1-1) in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game at New Bedford, Mass.

TWILIGHT LEAGUE: Ben Seel and Dakota Rabbit combined on a one-hitter to help Yankee Ford take a 1-0 win over Lenders Network at Westbrook.

Kyle Danielson hit a two-run double in the third inning to help Aero Heating & Ventilating take a 6-1 win over Patriot Insurance at Portland.

Andrew Richards struck out four in four scoreless innings for Aero.

NCAA: Frankie Vanderka threw a three-hitter, Travis Jankowski had four hits, and America East champion Stony Brook earned a trip to the College World Series with a 7-2 victory over LSU in the deciding game of their super regional at Baton Rouge, La.

AUTO RACING

FORMULA ONE: Lewis Hamilton became the seventh different winner in the first seven races of the season, taking the checkered flag at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.

Hamilton, driving a McLaren Mercedes, finished 2.5 seconds ahead of Lotus’ Romain Grosjean, with Sauber’s Sergio Perez in third.

PASS NORTH: Johnny Clark of Farmingdale won his third straight race at Speedway 660 in Geary, New Brunswick, as Mainers swept the top three places.

Travis Benjamin of Belfast finished second, and Cassius Clark of Farmington was third.

OXFORD PLAINS: Travis Stearns beat Dave Farrington Jr. and Tim Brackett in the Late Model feature on fan appreciation night Saturday.

David Tripp took the Strictly Stock feature, Matt Moore won in Mini Stock, and Fred Clavett and Kyle Treadwell won the Outlaw races.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Epiphanny Prince scored 26 points to help the visiting Chicago Sky beat the New York Liberty 73-64 for their fifth straight victory.

Tina Charles had 22 points and 11 rebounds to power the Connecticut Sun to a 92-73 win over the Atlanta Dream at Uncasville, Conn.
