The Falmouth Heritage Museum is holding a barn dedication and grand opening celebration Saturday with a 1925 REO Fire Engine and Smokey Bear Sign.

Kid’s Karnival

Life Church on Elkins Road is holding Kid’s Karnival from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday that will feature pony rides, a trapeze, a candy volcano and more than 30 games.

Community bike ride

Healthy Kids, Happy Kids and Scratch Bakery are teaming up to hold a community bike ride and safety clinic from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday. It will begin at Scratch in Willard Square. Participants will ride on the Greenbelt Trail to Bug Light, where there will be games. After returning to Willard Square, there will be a yoga stretch with Greener Postures Yoga studio.

Crafters, vendors needed

Lighthouse open Saturdays

Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse will open for the 2012 season from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The lighthouse will open again on June 30, and every Saturday and Sunday in July and August.

Summer reading program

The Scarborough Public Library will kick off its annual summer reading program for children Wednesday with a free performance of “Tellin’ Tales” presented by The Little Red Wagon theater troupe. The event will be held at 6 p.m. at the library.

The Little Red Wagon is the longest running nonprofit, children’s theater tour in the United States.

Following the performance, the library staff will be on hand to assist families in registering children from pre-kindergarten through middle school for the reading program.

Historic architecture exhibit

Call for gallery benches

The Farnsworth Art Museum and the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship invites Maine artisans and artists to enter a competition to design benches for the museum’s galleries.

Completed versions of the top 18 design entries will be exhibited at the Center’s Messler Gallery from Jan. 18 to April 3, 2013.

The museum will then make a select number of purchase awards from the exhibition to furnish its galleries.

The deadline for entries is Aug. 1.

Any material or combination of materials is permissible.

Seating must be moveable to accommodate flexible use within the museum’s galleries.
Individual units can be designed to seat from two to five people and must be available for the Farnsworth to purchase at a retail price not to exceed $3,300.

Submissions may consist of images of completed work, prototypes, models or renderings.

Narrated bus tour

Tickets are now being sold for the Union Historical Society Come Spring Bus Tour being held in July as part of the town’s Founders Day celebration.

Saint Joseph’s College will offer two classes Babysitter’s Training & First Aid Certification classes, the first on Wednesday and the second on Sunday at the Harold Alfond Center on campus.
Children, ages 11 to 15, are eligible to participate to learn leadership skills, caregiving, first aid, safe play and safety.

Students will be given a comprehensive babysitter’s training manual and the tools needed to create a babysitter’s kit.

Those who successfully complete the course will earn an American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training certification and a First Aid Certification.

Students should bring a lunch, snacks and a drink.

Cost is $75 (or $65 for recertification).
