WINDHAM — The controversial Busque Quarry on the corner of Nash Road and Route 302 is officially up and running.

Shaw Bros., which bought the quarry last fall after the death of former owner and town councilor Peter Busque, received a certificate of occupancy from the town this morning, meaning the required site work is complete and quarrying operations can commence.

Shaw Bros. has been blasting rock there for the past few months to complete the site work, including a paved entrance and stormwater detention pond.

The town has been receiving complaints from neighbors, about a dozen of whom attended a meeting this morning with representatives of the town, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and Shaw Bros. at the town office.

The purpose was to allow Shaw Bros. to explain what will be going on at the quarry in the near future and allow neighbors to express their concerns.

The quarry was originally approved by the town in 2007.
