WALDOBORO — The Damariscotta Area fourth Sunday sacred harp singing session will be held this weekend from 2 to 5 p.m., at St. Paul’s Union Chapel on Dutchneck Road.

A potluck supper is planned during that time.

As always, beginners, curious friends and passing strangers are welcome to join in song, states a release from organizers.

The singing will be primarily from “The Sacred Harp,” 1991 Denson edition, a shapenote tunebook that has been in continuous publication with periodic revisions since 1844. The music consists of hymns, fuging tunes, anthems and other songs in a style rooted in Colonial New England. It was popular in Maine until the Civil War and is still practiced in areas of the rural South and West. Books will be available to borrow or purchase.
