LEWISTON — Seven ducklings are safe and sound – and clean – after their rescue from a city sewer in Maine.

Officials say a mother duck waddled across a sewer grate Friday morning in Lewiston, but her ducklings fell through the grate when they followed her, plopping into the sewer.

Animal Control Officer Wendell Strout couldn’t retrieve the ducklings because his net wasn’t long enough.

The Sun Journal said Strout then called Richard Burton, who’s known locally for rescuing cats, raccoons, skunks and other animals from tough predicaments.

In the end, Burton climbed into the sewer and rescued the grimy ducklings by hand.

The mother duck ran off, but the ducklings were cleaned up and brought to a safe place, where they’ll stay until they’re ready to be set free.
