The Rebecca Emery Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution announced the winners of its 2012 Flag Essay Contest for Grade 6 and 7 students.
Courtney Williams, from Seacoast Christian School, won the Grade 6 contest and Lauren Paquet from Saint James School took Grade 7 honors for the contest asking contributors to write an essay detailing “Our Flag: What It Means to Me.”
WELLS
Money for mentor programs
Tanger Outlets, a major retail outlet center developer and operator, awarded two grants to the Wells-Ogunquit Community School District through its recently established TangerKids grant program.
District volunteer coordinator Maryanne Foley was awarded $600 for the “Acorns to Oaks” mentoring program at Wells Elementary School. A grant of $300 was awarded to Wells Junior High School special education consulting teacher Beth Goodwin to support a collaborative that pairs Wells High School seniors with third- and fourth-grade students for a mentoring program.
Education service lauded
The Wells-Ogunquit Community School District honored a number of retiring and longtime educators at a “Celebration of Service to Education” ceremony held June 14.
Retirees and their respective years of service included Nancy Whitman, 41 years; Linda Logan, 38 years; Cynthia Guthro, 35 years; Al Fink, 34 years; Frank Lewis, 32 years; Johanna Reinke, 31 years; Donna Sweeney, 27 years; Michele Lazzara, 23 years; Karen Lucy, 16 years; Georgianna Pilkington, 13 years. School Committee members retiring include David Johnson, 12 years of service; Les LaFond and Damon Russell, 9 years; and Karen Ropes, 5 years.
Lynn Mercier, Ingrid Roach, Bruce Peloquin and Debra Springfield also were recognized for 20 years of service to the district.

‘Let’s Move!’ recognition
A U.S. Department of Agriculture representative visited Baldwin Consolidated Elementary School, Cornish Elementary School and South Hiram Elementary School on June 18 to acknowledge their participation in first lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” initiative to end childhood obesity within a generation.

Picked for Honor Band
Edward Little High School student Amanda Nadeau will represent Maine in July as a member of the national performing organization The Sound of America Honor Band and Chorus.
Nadeau, a drum major, trumpeter and singer in Edward Little’s band and choir, will join student performers for a 23-day European concert tour.

Help for recreation group
The Bridgton Recreation Advancement Group has received a $1,000 donation from “The Cap” Memorial Inc. to help with its ongoing efforts to complete Bridgton’s Ham Recreation Complex on BRAG Way.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Maine still has a few spots for runners in the TD Bank Beach to Beacon on Aug. 4.

Local Girl Scout earns award
Emily Gibson of Portland earned the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award by completing her community service project, “Play It Forward.”
It’s the highest award that a Girl Scout may earn. To earn the award, a girl must spend a minimum of 80 hours planning and carrying out her project. Gibson is a daughter of Timothy and Carlene Gibson.
July 4th volunteers sought
City of Portland’s Public Service Department is seeking volunteers to help educate the public about recycling for the third annual 4th of July Stars and Strips Spectacular Festival on the Eastern Promenade. Volunteers will point recycling carts out to attendees and answer questions about what can be recycled.

Music boosters honored
Mike Fletcher, president of the South Portland Music Boosters, and his wife, Cindy, who is fundraising chair for the boosters, were recently honored with a director’s stand.
The Fletchers were recognized for their “outstanding contributions to the South Portland Music Boosters.”
Mike Fletcher has led the music boosters for the past seven years.
