A BASE RUNNER for the Maine Dirigo baseball team attempts to beat the throw to first base during a game played Sunday by 1860-era rules. The old-fashioned contest, which was open to the public, was played at Pettengill Farm in Freeport. Dirigo defeated the visiting Ipswich, (Mass.) Brewers by a score of 21-14. Hot dogs, sausage rolls and ice cream were available to the “cranks” (attendees). The Freeport Historical Society sponsored the event. Peter Mezoian of Portland played banjo during the game.
