Portland school officials are trying to figure what to do about overcrowding at the city’s newest elementary school.

Ocean Avenue School, which was already filled to capacity, is now projected to have an additional 30 to 50 students this September.

Officials plan to give notice to parents of children from outside the district that their children won’t be allowed to attend the school in September.

Officials are also considering other measures, including increasing the number of children in each classroom and converting music and art rooms into two classrooms.

To avoid large classes, officials are inviting the parents of incoming kindergarten students to consider applying for out-of-neighborhood placement at Longfellow Elementary School or East End Community School.

Ocean Avenue School was built in 2010 to replace the Nathan Clifford School and Baxter Elementary School. It has a maximum capacity for 440 students.
