To the editor:

The Brunswick School Department has a winner in its Music Department. Kudos to the Brunswick school system’s Music Department. As a retired music educator, I was so impressed with the spring concerts.

The band night which featured all our bands from grade five through grade 12, was an incredible testimony to young talent and excellent teaching. The sound that those teachers got from even the youngest musicians was really incredible.

From fifth grade to high school, it was a magical night!

The choral programs also are outstanding and the grade school singers were first rate. Because one of my granddaughter is in fourth grade, I attended the fourth grade choral concert. Students were tapped by their teachers, Jill Hodgedon and Cindy Brown, to help lead and arrange. The final piece was a round in three parts. Truly impressive.

For me, the crowning moment was the command performance of the Brunswick Junior High School Wind Ensemble. The music, though difficult, was played with enthusiasm and precision.

After it was over, my granddaughter said to me: “Nana, that was so much fun!”

I think what she really meant was: “We practiced; we worked hard; we were encouraged by our teacher; we succeeded; and that, Nana, was fun.”

It is small wonder that they received a platinum rating at the Great East Festival last month. Under the tutelage of Heidi Anderson and Shari Tarleton, the BJHS music program is thriving.

Congratulations to all of the music educators in the district.
