AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine’s congressional delegation is divided on the U.S. Supreme Court decision upholding the Affordable Care Act, with the Democratic House members expressing support and Republican senators saying it has problems.
Sen. Susan Collins says the court upheld a law that will ultimately increase health care costs, decrease choice and impose billions of dollars in new taxes and penalties.
Sen. Olympia Snowe says the law contains a big unknown: The cost of insurance plans in the health care exchanges.
Rep. Chellie Pingree says the court did the right thing by ruling in favor of consumers instead of big insurance companies.
Rep. Mike Michaud says the ruling provides certainty that Congress and the people need on the law’s constitutionality. He says the law’s not perfect, but it’s a huge step forward.
