CASCO – A Casco man died Thursday morning of an apparent heart attack soon after calling 911 to report a garage fire at his home on Quaker Ridge Road.

Paul Sutera, 63, of 278 Quaker Ridge Road, had called 911 at about 7 a.m. to report the fire, and according to Casco Fire Chief Jason Moen, Sutera suffered cardiac arrest on his way out of the house after waking his wife.

The exact cause of death is still under investigation, Moen said. The cause of the fire, which Moen said was contained to the garage, is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Sutera’s wife, Donna Sutera, performed CPR on Sutera, who had collapsed on the front lawn, until rescue personnel arrived. The man was then transported by Casco Rescue to Bridgton Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

About 45 firefighters from seven towns battled the blaze, which was fully involved when first responders arrived. Naples, Raymond, Casco, Bridgton, Otisfield and Windham responded. Moen said the fire was contained to the attached garage.
