BRUNSWICK

Fred Horch, who mounted an unsuccessful bid to represent House District 66 in 2010, will be on the ballot again this year, again as the Green Independent Party’s standard bearer.

Local Green-Independents nominated Horch during a caucus on Sunday at Curtis Memorial Library.

Horch, who had joined his wife during a sabbatical trip to Japan, returned this summer to take the place of placeholder candidate David Frans, who secured the party a spot on the ballot. Frans withdrew from the race after the June 12 primary.

That change is the first of two for House District 66, which will see another late shuffle in party nominations this weekend when local Democrats caucus Saturday to nominate a replacement for incumbent Rep. Alex Cornell du Houx.

A troubled romance with Belfast legislator Erin Herbig ultimately led to a settlement agreement barring Cornell du Houx from taking on a reelection bid.

In a letter announcing his resignation from the race, Cornell du Houx wrote that he decided not to seek re-election after receiving an active duty assignment as a public affairs officer for the U.S. Navy that conflicts with the legislative schedule.

Democrat Matthea Daughtry, formerly a communications associate for the political group Maine’s Majority, is the only candidate so far to publicly announce an intention to seek the party’s nomination at Saturday’s caucus.

That caucus, to be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, is open to the public but only members of the Democratic Town Committee living in District 66 will vote on a replacement candidate.

Republican John Bouchard, the only remaining candidate who submitted nomination papers by the March 15 deadline to qualify for the June 12 primary ballot, will represent the GOP in the House District 66 contest.
