I’ve made an observation about Edgar Allen Beem’s weekly column. Even though I rarely agree with anything he writes, I find his columns entertaining just the same. My observation is not about what he writes, but rather his photograph. Instead of making eye contact with his readers, in the photo he is looking off to the side, much the way Barack Obama looks from side to side when he reads from our taxpayer-funded, well-used teleprompters. Take a look at any other newspaper column that includes a photo of the author, and you will likely see that he or she is looking straight at you. As the saying goes, “The eyes are the mirror of the soul.” If Mr. Beem isn’t confident enough to look us in the eye, anything he writes should not be taken seriously in the first place.
