To the editor:
Upon recently returning from an out-of-state job search, I learned from this newspaper that six longtime members of the Brunswick Fire Department were retiring.
Having lived in Brunswick since 1975, I have known several of those retirees for some period of time and not only have they done a difficult job well, they have done it in a manner for which we can all be proud.
While the town has certainly changed in the intervening years, I believe the mission of these men and of all those in service to our community has not changed.
Though this is late in coming, I would like to say thank you for providing the exemplary professional services over the years to me, my family and all of the members of this community and all others you have been called to serve.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
