PORTLAND (AP) — Several Maine business leaders are coming to the defense of independent Senate candidate Angus King as he endures attack ads during NBC’s prime-time coverage of the Olympics.
The ads sponsored by U.S. Chamber of Commerce call the former two-term governor the “king of spending.” The chamber, based in Washington, is endorsing one of King’s opponents, Republican Charlie Summers, in the race to fill Sen. Olympia Snowe’s soon-to-be-empty seat.
The Maine Small Business Coalition already criticized the ads and described the chamber as “an interest group for large out-of-state and multi-national corporations.”
On Monday, several Maine business leaders held a news conference to deride the ads.
Kevin Hancock, president and CEO of Hancock Lumber, said King has a strong probusiness track record. He called the U.S. Chamber’s ads “misguided.”
