PORTLAND — International peace activist Kathy Kelly will kick off her Maine speaking tour, “The Cost of War, the Price of Peace: Hard Questions About the U.S. War in Afghanistan,” on Aug. 20 at 6:30 p.m., at First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church, 425 Congress St.

The speaking tour will also include a stop in Brunswick on Aug. 22.

According to a news release from organizers, Kelly, who returns to the U.S. this month after her eighth visit to Afghanistan, will present the perspectives of the Afghan Peace Volunteers on prospects for their future in relation to NATO and the U.S. military.

Kelly and her companions at Voices for Creative Nonviolence conduct research into the consequences of drone attacks, night raids and aerial bombings in Afghanistan, the release continues. Through maps, photos and videos, Kelly will consider some of the reasons why the U.S. government plans to continue its military presence in Afghanistan until 2024 and beyond.

She will also talk about responsible nonviolent resistance to U.S. warfare.

During each of three recent trips to Afghanistan, Kelly, as an invited guest of the Afghan Peace Volunteers, lived alongside ordinary Afghans in a working class neighborhood in Kabul. Kelly has also joined with activists in various regions of the country to protest drone warfare by holding demonstrations outside of U.S. military bases in Nevada, upstate New York, and, most recently, at Whiteman Air Force base in Missouri.

Occupy Maine—Bath- Brunswick region, Greater Brunswick PeaceWorks, Bring Our War Dollars Home Campaign, Maine Veterans for Peace, Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space, among others will sponsor Kelly’s talk at Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick at 7 p.m. on Aug. 22.

Other engagements on the tour include Bangor on Aug. 21, Rockland on Aug. 23, and Belfast on Aug. 24.
