BANGOR — The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which launched attack ads against independent Angus King, is hosting several events in Maine in support of King’s GOP opponent, Charlie Summers.

The chamber’s national political director, Rob Engstrom, is appearing at events today on Summers’ behalf in Bangor, Lewiston and Biddeford.

The chamber spent more than $400,000 on television ads that dubbed King the “King of spending” and saying he left a projected budget shortfall when he left office.

The attacks appeared during NBC’s prime-time coverage of the Olympics in London. The former two-term independent governor described the ads as “bunk.”
