Local historical society hosting old-fashioned beanhole supper

The Camden-Rockport Historical Society will host an old-fashioned bean-hole supper at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The supper, featuring Maine yellow-eye beans, will be at the historic Conway House complex on Route 1, just south of Hannaford.

Also on the menu will be Kirshner hot dogs, coleslaw, biscuits, pickles, an iced drink or coffee, and homemade pies from the pie table. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and members, and $5 for those age 6 to 12. Children under 6 get in free. Anyone who joins the historical society at the supper eats free.

Coffee shop’s solar-panel use puts it in running for $5,000

Coffee by Design is one of 10 finalists in a national competition to win $5,000.

Recently, Revision Solar installed 44 solar panels on the company’s Washington Avenue roastery and coffee shop. These panels generate roughly half of the roastery’s electricity needs and offset 18,000 pounds of carbon dioxide that would have been produced if the electricity came over the grid from plants that burn fossil fuels.

These solar panels caught the attention of the national organization Green America, giving Coffee by Design a chance to win $5,000 in prize money in this year’s People & Planet Award contest.

Should Coffee by Design win, it intends to use the prize money to replace its existing particleboard countertops with sustainable countertops produced by Maine-based Beachstone. Those countertops are made from recycled glass and seashells.

Winners will be based on public voting at http://bit.ly/Mnk7Dk. Voting ends at 5 p.m. Sept. 5.

 

How d’you like them tomatoes? Find out at ‘Pomodoropalooza’

Come meet Maine tomato growers and taste different varieties at “Pomodoropalooza,” a celebration of the Maine tomato at the Rosemont Produce Company Saturday.

The event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at 5 Commercial St.

Growers from Small Wonders Organics in Bowdoinham and Southpaw Farm in Unity will be on hand to answer questions, and there will be tomatoes available from a half dozen other Maine farms.

There will also be Maine cheeses to sample and Spanish wines from importer Chris Campbell.

There is a suggested donation of $10 for the event, which will go to Cultivating Community.
