THE BRUNSWICK AREA YOUTH FOOTBALL LEAGUE (BAYFL) Competition Cheering Squad returned from the NCA Cheering Camp recently with the 2012 Most Improved Squad Award. BAYFL attended the camp held at Husson University in Bangor, and 16 cheerleaders, ages 10-14, and six coaches representing Brunswick, Topsham, Durham, Bath, Bowdoinham and Harpswell, united as one squad and were selected as the Most Improved Team. Seven team members also received All-American nominations to try-out for the NCA squad. During this four-day camp, cheerleaders learn new cheers, chants, dances and stunts. Coaches also attended training, and upon successful completion of an exam, received up to three credit hours towards certification. Competitive cheering begins in November, with registrations due by the end of October. This program is open to children in grades 2-8. All competitions are held in the State of Maine. BAYFL is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1991 with a primary focus of developing character and teaching sportsmanship.
