Tobey Jacobs, a forestry intern with Portland’s Department of Public Services, collects data Tuesday on the crab apple trees along Franklin Street. With the help of a Maine Forest Service grant, interns are using iPads to catalog all the trees on Portland streets as part of the city’s first comprehensive tree inventory in 150 years. The data will be used to create online maps with details for each neighborhood.
