Windham’s baseball coach steps down after five years, cites family commitments

Mike Fullerton has resigned as Windham High baseball coach after five seasons. The Eagles made the playoffs in three of his five seasons with this spring’s 13-5 record being his best team. The Eagles lost to Scarborough in the Western Class A semifinals.

Fullerton, 34, said family responsibilities prompted his decision to step down. “My kids are getting older and they need me around more,” he said.

“Running a varsity program takes a lot of commitment that I don’t think I can give at this point.”

Fullerton is a graduate of Deering High and the University of Maine at Farmington. He teaches health and physical education at Lincoln Middle School in Portland. Fullerton coaches middle school sports and said he would still like to coach at the varsity level in the future.

GOLF

PGA: Jimmy Walker shot an 8-under 62 to lead at 12 under in the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C.

Defending champion Webb Simpson was a stroke back after a 63, and first-round leader Carl Pettersson, Tim Clark, Sergio Garcia and Harris English were 10 under.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Bernhard Langer was leading at 7 under when first-round play in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open was suspended because of rain at Endicott, N.Y.

LPGA: Mika Miyazato and Sydnee Michaels shot 7-under 65 in 100-degree heat to share the first-round lead in the Safeway Classic at North Plains, Ore.

Cristie Kerr, Inbee Park and Pornanong Phatlum were a stroke back.

So Yeon Ryu, the Toledo Classic winner last week, was two shots behind at 67 along with Brittany Lincicome, Alison Walshe and Jee Young Lee.

Michelle Wie opened with a 69.

WOODS VS. MCILROY: Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy will square off in China this fall in a one-day exhibition.

Woods and McIlroy are to play an 18-hole match on Oct. 29. Mark Steinberg at Excel Sports Management, the agent for Woods, described the competition as customer entertainment.

TENNIS

WESTERN & SOUTHERN OPEN: Serena Williams had her 19-match streak snapped by Germany’s Angelique Kerber at Mason, Ohio, the first time she’d even lost a set since Wimbledon.

Older sister Venus Williams reached the semifinals of a tournament for the first time this season by surviving her third three-set match of the week.

On the men’s side, Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro won in straight sets, setting up a rematch, won by del Potro, of their bronze-medal match at the Olympics.

Roger Federer beat Mardy Fish to reach the semifinals, where he’ll play Stanislas Wawrinka.

SOCCER

EUROPE: Fulham Coach Martin Jol said American Clint Dempsey has refused to play for the English Premier League club again and is seeking a transfer.

Asked if the midfielder would face Norwich in Saturday’s first league match of the season, Jol said that “Clint told us that he wanted to leave and that he wasn’t ready to play for this club anymore.”

BASEBALL

LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES: Uganda, the first team from Africa to advance to South Williamsport in the 66-year history of the tourney, lost in its debut as Panama defeated the boys from Lugazi, 9-3.

Uganda’s coaches said they didn’t expect any of the players’ parents to make the expensive trip to Pennsylvania. The team, however, has drawn a contingent of vocal fans who have cheered wildly, especially after Daniel Alio’s towering home run to center in the sixth.

Canada and Texas won the early games Friday.
