A 13-year-old boy escaped serious injury Monday when he rode his all-terrain vehicle into a car on Wallace Shore Road.
The boy, whose name was not released due to his age, lost control of his ATV shortly after 5:30 p.m. when he crashed into a 2004 Chevrolet driven by Earnest Pinkham, 61, of Brunswick.
“The ATV was being operated at what was determined to be an ‘imprudent speed,’” said Lt. Thomas Williams of the Cumberland County Sheriff ’s Office. “It’s a narrow road with a hill and Mr. Pinkham slowed because of the terrain. He saw the ATV coming at him and pulled off to the right and stopped, that’s when the ATV hit him.”
Sheriff ’s deputies estimated damage to the car to be $1,500, while the machine sustained only about $100 worth of bent metal to its brush guard.
Williams said the boy was wearing a helmet and received only minor scrapes and bruises, but to be safe was taken by ambulance to be examined.
The boy’s father received a summons for allowing his son to operate an ATV in violation of state law, which confines riders fewer than 16 years old to their own property.
