PORTLAND (AP) — Maine is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Baxter State Park.
On Aug. 6, 1962, former Gov. Percival Baxter acquired the 28th and final parcel of land that would constitute the northern Maine park named in his honor. Baxter, who was from Portland, deeded the land to the state as a gift the following month.
Friends of Baxter State Park is partnering with several organizations to mark the anniversary today with events that include talks, a visit to the Baxter family cemetery plot, a museum exhibit and a reception and program at the Maine Historical Society.
Baxter State Park consists of nearly 210,000 acres and has 46 mountain peaks, including the highest peak in the state, Katahdin.
