FAYETTE — A Belgrade man likely fell asleep on his way to work early Thursday morning when the car he was driving crashed on Route 17, police said.
Joshua Godleski, 20, was ejected and pinned underneath his Subaru Legacy station wagon following the accident, which occurred at about 5 a.m.
He was treated at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where he was listed in good condition Thursday afternoon.
Maine State Trooper Sean Kinney said Godleski indicated that he fell asleep as he was driving to work.
The westbound vehicle veered off the road to the left, and struck a rock and trees, rolling over at least once before stopping on its wheels. Godleski’s legs were sticking out from under the car, Kinney said.
“Luckily some people stopped by to check,” Kinney said.
After the car was lifted off Godleski, he was taken by Winthrop Ambulance and then transferred to LifeFlight helicopter, which took him to the Lewiston hospital.
Kinney said traffic on the road was reduced to one lane during rescue and clean-up operations, which lasted about two hours Thursday morning.
Firefighters from Fayette and Readfield assisted at the scene.
