MILLINOCKET — Navy Secretary Ray Mabus will be in Maine this weekend for a ceremony commemorating the naming of the USNS Millinocket.

The Millinocket will be the third Joint High Speed Vessel built to carry personnel and equipment for the Navy, Army and Marines. It’s currently under construction at a shipyard on the Alabama coast.

The ship will follow in the tradition of the USS Stephen W. Groves, a frigate named for an East Millinocket fighter pilot who was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his actions during the Battle of Midway in the Pacific in World War II.

Sunday’s ceremony is being held at the Millinocket Municipal Airport. This is Mabus’ first visit to Maine since 2009 when he toured Bath Iron Works.
